Icons from your device first, the internet only if you allow it

Does NexaTabs Load Website Icons From the Internet?

NexaTabs reads website icons from the browser's local icon cache first. With "Load website icons from the internet" on (the default), a missing icon may be loaded from the website or Google's favicon service. With it off, NexaTabs makes no network requests for icons.

Your Current Challenges

Not knowing whether a tab manager contacts websites or third-party services such as Google
Wanting a list of saved tabs with recognisable icons
Working under a policy that limits outbound requests
Seeing blank or generic icons and not knowing why

Use Cases

Privacy-conscious users who want icons only from the device
People on restricted or metered networks
Teams reviewing an extension's network behaviour
Anyone checking what "local-first" covers in practice

How NexaTabs Helps

Website icons help you recognise saved tabs at a glance. NexaTabs handles them in this order:

1. First, the browser's local icon cache (read through the browser's favicon permission), together with icons NexaTabs has already saved with your workspaces.
2. If an icon is still missing and "Load website icons from the internet" is on (the default), it may be loaded from the website or Google's favicon service.
3. If the setting is off, NexaTabs makes no network requests for icons, does not store remote icons, and shows a simple fallback icon instead.

You can change the setting in Settings (popup or dashboard).

What this setting does not change
- Your workspaces, notes and settings stay in local browser storage either way; NexaTabs does not upload them.
- The websites you open still make their own network requests and run their own scripts.
- Some tabs may show a generic icon when the setting is off and the browser has no cached icon for that site.

Step By Step Guide

1. Open the NexaTabs popup or dashboard and go to Settings.
2. Find "Load website icons from the internet".
3. Leave it on for the most complete icons (missing ones may come from the website or Google's favicon service), or turn it off so NexaTabs makes no network requests for icons.
4. Reopen the popup to see the result; missing icons show a simple fallback.

Why NexaTabs

NexaTabs is local-first and private by design: workspace data stays in your browser, with no NexaTabs account or cloud sync. For icons, it reads the browser's local icon cache first, may load a missing icon from the website or Google's favicon service while the default setting is on, and makes no icon requests when you turn it off. Free forever in its present form.

Benefits

- A clear picture of when NexaTabs reaches the internet
- One switch to stop icon requests to websites and Google's favicon service
- Recognisable icons for most tabs either way
- No change to how your workspaces are stored

Choose how NexaTabs loads icons

Open NexaTabs Settings and decide whether missing website icons may load from the website or Google's favicon service. NexaTabs is free for Chrome and Edge.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is "Load website icons from the internet" on by default?

Yes. NexaTabs still reads icons from the browser's local icon cache first. Only a missing icon may be loaded from the website or Google's favicon service.

What happens when I turn it off?

NexaTabs uses only the browser's local icon cache and icons it already saved, or a simple fallback. It makes no network requests for icons, so nothing goes to websites or Google's favicon service for icons.

Does turning it off affect my workspaces?

No. Tabs, notes, bookmarks and settings are unchanged. Only how icons are shown changes.

Does this make the websites I visit private?

No. The setting covers icons inside NexaTabs only. Websites you open still follow their own privacy practices.
