How to Export and Import NexaTabs Workspace JSON Backups
A JSON backup is a file you create on purpose. Export a workspace when you want a local copy, then import that file later on Chrome or Edge. It is not cloud sync and not automatic backup.
Your Current Challenges
Local workspaces feel stuck on one browser profile
Reinstalling Chrome or Edge feels risky without a portable copy
Moving from Chrome to Edge needs a deliberate handoff
Cloud sync is not wanted, but a file you control is
It is unclear what a JSON backup includes versus logins and page state
Use Cases
Privacy-conscious users who want a manual local archive
People migrating from Chrome to Edge (or the reverse)
Power users exporting before a big reorganization
Anyone setting up NexaTabs on a fresh profile
Developers and archivists who prefer readable files they can store
How NexaTabs Helps
Export a NexaTabs workspace to a JSON file when you want a user-controlled local copy, then import that file later when you need the workspace back. The file stays on your device unless you move it yourself. It is not automatic backup and not cloud sync.
1. What a JSON backup is for
- A deliberate snapshot of supported workspace data you choose to export.
- A practical way to archive a project, prepare for a browser reinstall, or move between Chrome and Edge where supported.
- A readable file you can store with your other local documents.
2. What it is not
- Not encrypted unless you protect the file yourself (for example with disk encryption or a password-protected archive).
- Not a full browser backup: logins, cookies, page caches, form drafts, and most extension settings are outside the file.
- Not automatic: nothing uploads or schedules itself in the background.
- Not a guarantee against every future format change; keep dated copies if an archive matters.
3. Soft optional path in NexaTabs
NexaTabs is a free Chrome and Edge extension with local workspaces. It has two JSON paths. Export workspace and Import workspace handle one workspace: the import always adds a new copy and never overwrites, skips invalid URLs, and keeps at most 500 tabs. Export backup and Import backup handle all your NexaTabs data: the backup import replaces everything after you confirm. Neither needs a NexaTabs account. Honest limits
- Imports depend on a valid file and version compatibility.
- URLs can change, disappear, or require login when you reopen them.
- Keep the JSON file somewhere safe; anyone with the file can read what it contains.
Step By Step Guide
1. Decide what you need: one workspace, or everything.
2. For one workspace: in the NexaTabs popup, open that workspace's menu and choose Export workspace. Save the file somewhere you control (for example a project folder or encrypted drive).
3. For everything: open Local backups in Settings and choose Export backup.
4. Give the file a clear name and date so you can find it later.
5. When you need it again, open NexaTabs on the target browser or profile.
6. For a single-workspace file, choose Import workspace in Settings. It always adds a new workspace and never overwrites one.
7. For a full backup file, choose Import backup. It replaces all NexaTabs data on that profile after you confirm, so use it only for a full restore.
8. Review the result: check tab titles, notes, and bookmarks before you rely on it. Single-workspace import tells you if it skipped invalid URLs or tabs over the 500-tab limit.
9. Optional: use Smart Import if you are bringing tabs from OneTab, Workona, Session Buddy, or similar lists rather than a NexaTabs file.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is JSON export the same as cloud sync?
No. You create and move the file yourself. Nothing syncs to a NexaTabs server, and there is no NexaTabs account for this workflow.
Does the JSON file include my website logins?
No. Expect workspace structure and supported link data, not cookies, passwords, or logged-in session state. You will sign in again where sites require it.
Can I move workspaces from Chrome to Edge?
Yes. To move one workspace, use Export workspace in one browser and Import workspace in the other; it is added as a new workspace. To move everything, use Export backup and Import backup, which replaces all NexaTabs data in the target browser after you confirm. Review the result before you delete the old copy.
Is the backup encrypted?
Not by itself. Protect the file with your own disk encryption, a secure folder, or a password-protected archive if the contents are sensitive.
